What is Fresher’s Week?
In the UK, the first week of university is called Fresher’s Week.
It’s designed to welcome new students, offering a variety of events, activities, and workshops to help them settle in and get to know their new environment. From taster sessions of different societies to campus tours and introduction talks, Freshers Week is a fantastic opportunity to ease into university life before the academic term officially begins. For international students, this week is especially important for adjusting to a new culture, making friends, and finding your footing in a new country.

Register and Enroll
Before classes begin, you’ll need to attend some essential meetings and complete your enrolment process. This will usually include getting your student ID, picking your course modules, and meeting your academic advisors and professors. During these early days, you’ll also be introduced to key academic resources such as the library, study spaces, and online platforms that will support you throughout your studies.
TIP:
Make sure you attend your department’s welcome talks. Not only will you get crucial information, but you’ll also have the chance to meet your coursemates and key academic staff.

Student’s Union
Each university in the UK has a Students' Union (SU), which is a hub of student activities and support. Run by students for students, the SU advocates for your rights, represents you in discussions with the university, and provides services that make student life more enjoyable. During Freshers Week, your SU will host various welcome events, including fairs, socials, and workshops, to introduce you to everything the university has to offer.
Societies and Clubs
The SU also manages and supports university clubs and societies. This is your chance to explore your interests and discover new passions. There is something for every taste, with students starting their own societies on the most niche topics every year. You can pick up a new hobby, learn a new skill, or geek out over your favourite fandom. If you are feeling a little bit homesick, there are also international societies celebrating different cultures, ethnicities and nationalities. You can find like-minded people from similar backgrounds and stay connected to your culture even miles away from home.

Explore the Campus and City
During Fresher’s Week many universities offer guided tours of the campus. Take the time to explore your new surroundings, discover the unique buildings, study spaces, cafes, sports facilities and secret locations. In addition, take some time to do some sightseeing in your new town or city. Many cities join in on Fresher’s Week activities, with local restaurants and cafes welcoming new students, offering limited deals and hosting fun events.
